What is a Shamrock Shake?
The Shamrock Shake is a seasonal green mint flavored milkshake sold at McDonald’s during the month of March to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.
What Does A Shamrock Shake Taste Like?
It’s a sweet and creamy tasting mint (not peppermint) flavored shake, made with vanilla ice cream.
Why mint instead of peppermint?
Many of the recipes on the internet call for peppermint extract. Although it would still taste great, it just won’t be the mint flavor of the original Shamrock Shake. Mint extract was a little harder to find than peppermint so I ended up ordering a small mint extract from Amazon.
Around the month of March you’ve most likely come across the Shamrock Shake McDonald’s has to offer, even if you don’t frequent McDonald’s you’ve probably seen some instagram shots of this bright green colored milkshake. While the drink itself is pretty and very photogenic for the gram, it’s full of toxic ingredients and dairy. 35 different ingredients to be exact. Just a few of the ingredients listed are high-fructose corn syrup, Preservative, Yellow 5, Blue 1, carrageenan and artificial flavors.
If you must have a Shamrock shake, making your own is incredibly easy to do and taste the same (maybe even better) minus most of the toxic ingredients and dairy. I will say though, adding maraschino cherries isn’t exactly preservative-free and does contain food coloring, so if you are really limiting, I would omit the cherries.
Make sure to use mint extract instead of peppermint or it may taste a like a candy cane, unless you prefer that!
This copycat Shamrock Shake I wouldn’t call healthy but it is a lot better for you than the McDonald’s version, and it’s dairy-free!

Dairy-Free Shamrock Shake
How to make a dairy-free copycat McDonald's shamrock shake
- 2 Pints Vegan Vanilla Ice Cream
- 1 Cup Coconut Milk
- Handful Fresh Spinach
- 1 Tsp Mint Extract
- 1 Tsp Vanilla Extract
- Coconut Whipped Cream Topping
- Maraschino Cherries Topping
- Green Sugar Sprinkles
- Add the spinach and coconut milk to the blender and blend
- Add ice cream, vanilla, and mint extract and blend.
- Pour into glasses and top with the coconut whipped cream, green sugar sprinkles
- Top with maraschino cherries
